FAQ

What makes our service unique?

Our policy is to use a two-step treatment plan. First we make a clear diagnosis: utilizing both Western and Eastern modalities; we may use western technology such as MRI, CT scan, X-ray and electromyologram (EMG) in conjunction with traditional eastern techniques, such as pulse and tongue evaluation. In addition, many of these tests can be performed right in our office.

Then, together with the patient, we plan the best course of treatment. Treatment options include: Acupuncture, physical therapy, Chinese herbs, and western medications.

Acupuncture is performed on various parts of the body including back, ear, and skull. Electrical acupuncture, cupping, acupressure, and other techniques are used as supplements.

Our physical therapy program includes onsite physician supervision, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, electrophoresis, TENS, heat/cryotherapy, and various rehabilitative exercises.

Chinese herbs are used for a number of different reasons, including but not limited to, detoxification and amelioration and treatment of symptoms. For your convenience, the herbs can be directly purchased from the clinic.

If western medication is necessary it will be prescribed for by Dr. Jun Xu.

What is acupuncture? How does it work?

Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing by inserting needles at very precise points within meridians (energy channels in the body). The acupuncture needles can trigger the release of chemicals and hormones leading to improved immune and energy function.

What is pain management?

It is a unique program in rehabilitation medicine with special skills including physical, occupational, psychosocial, music therapy, acupuncture, and various medications to treat your pain.

What are the needles like? Do they hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very thin. The point is smooth (not hollow with cutting edges like hypodermic needles). Most patients feel minimal pain as the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at all.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbology medicine is mainstream in Eastern medicine. Patients may be prescribed specific herbal formulas designed to treat their individual condition. Drs. Jun Xu and Hong Su will prescribe the formulas and supply the herb to you if it is medically necessary.

What conditions can be treated?

Drs. Jun Xu and Hong Su treat many ailments such as: acute and chronic pain, fibromyalgia, athletic injuries, arthritis, neck and low back pain, frozen shoulder, bursitis, tendonitis, pinched nerves, sciatica, sinusitis, allergies, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, stoke, stress, overweight, fatigue, IBS, PMS, and much, much more...

Are acupuncture and/or Chinese herbs covered by insurance?

Now, more and more insurance companies cover acupuncture costs when performed by a licensed M.D. We are providers for Medicare, United Healthcare, Anthem and others, as well as all policies with "out of network' benefits, such as PPO, POS, Freedom Plan of Cigna, Healthnet, Aetna, Oxford, etc. Please call our office for help in determining your coverage. Reimbursement for herbs is currently unavailable.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

THIS SECTION CONTAINS THE INFORMATION ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE AND MICROCURRENT NON SURGICAL FACE LIFT.

What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and beauty that focuses on both internal and external self. It will bring you some of the results as follows:
1. Improvement of muscle tone, dermal contraction, and collagen production. Your skin becomes more delicate and fair.
2. Elimination and reduction of bags under the eyes, puffiness, fine lines of the face, and reduce large wrinkles.
3. Minimization of double chins and reduction of sagginess.

What is the advantage of acupuncture face lift over surgical one?

Acupuncture is not a replacement for surgical facelift or botox injection, and will not provide an overnight solution; the improvement is subtle and occurs over time. Still, acupuncture face-lifts can be an excellent holistic alternative to traditional surgical face-lift. With acupuncture, the underlying causes of aging are treated rather than masking the symptoms with a surgical face-lift and allowing further decay and dysfunction to continue within the body.

Treatment with herbs and acupuncture is not only substantially less expensive than a traditional surgical face-lift, but far safer. The treatment is risk free from potential dangerous side effects such as numbness, scarring, swelling, discoloration, and even disfigurement.

What are some of the advantages of acupuncture over botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin and among one of the deadliest known to man. Although it is diluted to control its potency, with frequent use, it is possible for systemic toxicity resulting from accidental injection. However, when used safely and supervised by a physician, botox may be an effective treatment for wrinkles. But not withstanding, acupuncture is safer and less expensive when compared to botox treatments.

What is the contraindication for acupuncture face-lifts?

The individuals with low platelet counts, bleeding disorders, leukemia, and some blood disorders are not recommended for these treatments. The acupuncture needles may cause minimal bleeding and those with blood disorders are advised not undergo acupuncture face-lifts.

When was facial rejuvenation acupuncture studied in China?

The Chinese approach to beauty has always been identified that beauty comes from inside of the body. As early as the Sung Dynasty (960AD-1270AD), acupuncturists have employed rejuvenation practices for the Empress and other court subjects. The Chinese realized that by using the body's inner qi (internal energy), and manipulating its channels, it may be used to initiate healing processes and improve facial appearance.

What are the expected results and benefits of Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

The goals of Regenerative Acupuncture are improvement of lymph and fluid flow, metabolism, reduction of swelling, and addition of tone and elasticity to facial skin and muscles. Depending on numerous factors including age, health, lifestyle, and extent of skin damage, results may be seen after 2-3 treatments. A feeling of change often occurs before one notices visual change. However, visible lasting results may be seen after 6-7 treatments.

What are the differences between surgery and cosmetic acupuncture?

First, there is none of the risks or discomforts involved in surgery. For example: there is no facial swelling and hide-in-bedroom healing periods. Even though there is occasional light black and blue on the face, but it will disappear after two to three days.

Second, results from cosmetic acupuncture are incremental, which gives you time to mentally and physically adjust to the changes happening in your body. The skin does not get tight and papery. Results are gradual and incremental and are not identifiable as a dramatic face lift.

Third, the change is not solely external. Acupuncture heals the body from within so in addition to a healthy and glowing exterior, the person will feel more relaxed and stress-free. Many of our patients report that their friends ask, What have you been doing to yourself? You look great! And the answer to that is usually, "I feel great".

How do you perform Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture? Is it painful?

Sterilized and disposable hair-thin needles are inserted into the meridians of the face and distinct extremity points such as and hands and legs. The needles may or may not be connected to an electrical stimulation machine. The selection of acupuncture points and electrical stimulation depends on your composition, body type, color of tongue and characteristic of your pulse. The acupuncture needles are very thin. The point is smoothing (not hollow with cutting edges like hypodermic needles). Most patients feel minimal pain as the needles are inserted, some feel no pain at all.

Who would benefit from Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture?

Anyone who is looking for a way to alleviate or even get rid of symptoms of aging.

What is the treatment course?

The course of treatment usually consists of 10 to 12 visits for those ages 40 and below, 20 to 22 visits for those ages 40 and above. It is recommended 2 visits per week. Depends on individual, some patients may need more visits to get better results.

How long it will last?

It usually last from 2 to 3 years. Sometimes you may need maintenance treatment after your finishing program.

Do you use other machine to help face lift?

Yes, we use micro current microlift machine.

How dose micro current work?

Uses a tiny micro current, which helps to tone, lift and re-educate the muscles back to their original position. The face has over thirty
muscles that lie directly below, and are connected to, the skin's
surface. When muscles are stimulated they either shorten and lengthen.

Proper firmness is re-established through the non-surgical procedure by correcting the sagging muscle, which in turn corrects the sag of the skin. The treatment also stimulates blood circulation, which helps improve muscle tone and counteract dryness.

Micro-current also works on improving the skin tissue, acne scarring, blemishes, dehydrated skin, and problematic oily skin. It also softens lines and wrinkles and works to generally improve the skinÆs texture and tone.

It is virtually sub-sensory, due to the low frequency, client feels very little if anything at all.

Treatments are generally run as a course of treatments, averaging
between 10-12 sessions.

Some patients will need more and some patients will require less; this will depend on the patient's skin tissue and their muscle tone.
Maintenance treatment, which on average is once a month or between 4 to 6 weeks.

Micro current was designed to retard the signs of ageing, to keep the skin youthful and glowing, and to keep the muscles toned.

Micro current will stimulate the circulation of energy to the facial
tissues and muscles. This increases the rate that the skin produces
proteins such as collagen and elastin and muscle tissue can be
re-constructed. It therefore deals with both the skin and the supporting muscle tissue beneath. It restores form and vitality to facial muscles that have gone soft due to lack of use and lack of circulation.

The treatments improve lymphatic drainage of the face resulting in
improvements in complexion and reduction of eye bags.

What else does "MICRO CURRENT" do?

Increases Adenosine Tri Phosphate levels (A.T.P.) By up to 500%.

This is a chemical reaction in the body, which provides muscle and body energy, giving a feeling well being. Increases fibroblastic activity By up to 60%. Fibroblast cells are responsible for producing collagen in the skin. As we age, the collagen levels decrease, showing more signs of ageing. By increasing fibroblastic activity, we can soften lines, hydrate the skin, and leaving a wonderful glow. Increases protein synthesis By up to 73%

Muscles are largely made up of protein by increasing protein synthesis, the muscle becomes more elastic and rejuvenated. Elastin is also another form of protein and again the production of it is increased, leaving the skin's appearance refined and improved with softened lines and wrinkles.

Increase membrane transport ( cell permeability) By up to 30-40%

When the body ages, cells become less permeable so various functions in the body slow down. In simple terms, this will then help to absorb more nutrients, water and oxygenated blood, in order to excrete more toxins, fluid retention, and re-oxygenate.

It is Virtually subsensory. Due to the low frequency used, the client
feels very little if anything at all.

It has beneficial healing effects. It helps to heal scars & blemishes
and to give a wonderful glow on the skin.

It can be used around the eye area. With many treatments, it is not
possible to work close to the eye area. The big advantage with micro
current ( low frequency) is that we are able to work intensively around
the eyes.

Question: What is Microcurrent?

A: Microcurrent is an electro-stimulator which sends a micro current through the skin and muscle via two hand held probes. This produces a firming and lifting effect. It also reduces puffiness and dark circles from around the eyes.

Question: Why isn't my skin like it used to be?

A: As we get older our blood circulation slows down resulting in a lack of nutrients and stimulation to the muscle. The muscle begins to weaken and gravity will encourage it to drop.

Question: How can Microcurrent help?

A: Microcurrent will speed up the circulation and not only feed and
stimulate the muscle but shorten it, back to its original tone.

Microcurrent is also very effective for toning breast buttock, thighs,
arms, and stomachs

This technique has been used in the medical profession for over 20
years, it is painless and totally safe In fact it is good for you.

Q: How long do the electro therapy sessions last?

A: About an hour and Dr. Hong Su will be able to tell you how many sessions are required to get you back into shape. Because only a
micro current is used the treatment is painless and totally safe.

Q: Are there any other benefits?

A: Our lymphatic drainage stimulates circulation in the lower layers of connective tissue providing increased nourishment to the epidermis.

Detoxifies by activating lymphatic system, ridding the tissue of toxic
waste so reducing puffiness and fluid retention. Microcurrent will leave a clearer, fresher, smother texture to the skin.

Q: How long will the result last?

A: After a complete course a maintenance treatment every 4-6 weeks is recommended to retain the results.

1. HOW MAY ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE MEDICINE HELP ME FOR PREGNANCY?
Acupuncture and Herbal Therapy are ancient Chinese methods used for the treatment and prevention of disease. They have been practiced consistently for the past five thousand years in China and other Asian countries, about one quarter of the world's population uses acupuncture and herbs as their main form of health care. The benefits of Acupuncture and TCM in treatment for the infertile couple can be found in early Chinese medical literature dating back to the 11AD. Not only do these techniques assist in regulating the menstrual cycle and invigorating the sperm, but they also serve to enhance the function of the whole body. This "whole body" health approach, in turn, provides a key to unlock unlimited potential in healing. This is especially appropriate for the over 40 year-old couple as it stimulates overall health to effect reproductive health and a reduction of biological age.

PMS, amenorrhea, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, immune system incongruities, and infertility related hormonal problems yield to many of these old world (traditional) procedures. Furthermore, herbal formulas that tonify the Kidney energy (renal and adrenal function), and Kidney essence (jing) are especially beneficial in raising sperm count and motility. The highly technical and expensive methods used in Western Medicine are supported by the complimentary set of procedures and herbal
recommendations.

2. DO YOU HAVE ANY CLINICAL EVIDENCE THAT CHINESE MEDICINE CAN HELP ME?

Please read the following article

Fertil Steril. 2002 Apr;77(4):721-4.

Influence of acupuncture on the pregnancy rate in patients who
undergo assisted reproduction therapy.

Department of Reproductive Medicine, Christian-Lauritzen-Institut,
Ulm, Germany. paulus@reprotox.de

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of acupuncture on the pregnancy
rate in assisted reproduction therapy (ART) by comparing a group of
patients receiving acupuncture treatment shortly before and after
embryo transfer with a control group receiving no acupuncture.

DESIGN: Prospective randomized study.
SETTING: Fertility center.
PATIENT(S): After giving informed consent, 160 patients who were
undergoing ART and who had good quality embryos were divided into
the following two groups through random selection: embryo transfer
with acupuncture (n = 80) and embryo transfer without acupuncture (n
= 80).
INTERVENTION(S): Acupuncture was performed in 80 patients 25
minutes before and after embryo transfer. In the control group,
embryos were transferred without any supportive therapy.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Clinical pregnancy was defined as the presence
of a fetal sac during an ultrasound examination 6 weeks after embryo
transfer.
RESULT(S): Clinical pregnancies were documented in 34 of
80 patients (42.5%) in the acupuncture group, whereas pregnancy rate
was only 26.3% (21 out of 80 patients) in the control group.
CONCLUSION(S): Acupuncture seems to be a useful tool for improving
pregnancy rate after ART.

3. COULD YOU EXPLAIN THE ADVANTAGES OF USING TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE(TCM) FOR PREGNANCY MORE SPECIFICALLY?

1, TCM sees the person as an integral Mind/body organism, thereby does not treat just symptoms/diseases. TCM ventures to stimulate the bodies natural healing potential by treating root causes rather than just symptoms.
2, TCM, used in the treatment of infertility, minimizes undesired side effects and accumulated toxicity from invasive procedures and drug therapies, known and unknown.
3, Traditional Chinese medicine may be used to strengthen and balance one's general health so that IVF, GIFT, ZIFT, ICSI, AHT and TET procedures are more effective. The TCM patient derives general health benefits and endocrine system balancing from specific acupuncture and herbal regimes. Pregnancy becomes easier to achieve and postpartum recuperation happens faster. Medical
studies have been done in China to verify this type of whole body health enhancement.
4, The widespread use of TCM suggests that it is a complete
traditional medical health care system and can be used with or
without the integration of Western medical techniques. The integration of Western medicine, as we know it in America, began in the Orient less than a century ago. It is called INTEGRAL CHINESE MEDICINE (ITCM). Ancient medical techniques of acupuncture
and herbs utilized with modern procedures, seem to work best.

4. HOW MIGHT EMOTION AFFECT MY PREGNANCY?

Irritability, depression, frustration are keywords to the Liver Qi
Stagnation. It must be noted that whenever an organ is mentioned in oriental medicine it implies the related conduit or meridian. A meridian is a pathway along which energy / Qi flows. The psychological aspect of the Liver is said to assist us in planning easily and wisely. The person who suffers from Liver Qi congestion may be found in a job that they don't enjoy, working late hours, and with a history of taking birth control pills. There frequently exists an inner psychological frustration about having and raising children. Dysfunctional family factors play a major role in the upset Liver, as the condition may have existed for many years.

Physical symptoms of irregular periods, PMS, dark colored blood with small clots, breast pain with distention, worry and frequent sighing and headaches often accompany the psychological symptoms. Pulse diagnostic palpation at the radial artery usually reveals a wiry and small quality pulse in the person with a Liver imbalance. Pulse diagnosis at the radial artery is an extremely sensitive and skilled art that takes many years to perfect. It is like a laboratory blood test. There are over twelve different pulse positions on each wrist and twenty-eight pulse qualities that can be related to each one of these positions. The readings yield a multitude of relationships when integrated and compared with the patients' signs, symptoms and tongue characteristics. The different pulses can confirm a diagnosis and be used to monitor a
patient's progress. Both pregnancy and the sex of a child can be
diagnosed from the pulses by a skilled practitioner.

Infertility due to Liver Qi Stagnation manifests mostly in women and is a frequent cause of unexplained infertility. This is because this type of Liver stagnation effects the blood flow in the pelvic cavity. Acupuncture at the right time in the menstrual cycle, in conjunction with an herbal formula and some counseling, very likely can clear the congestion in several months. The resulting pregnancy is more than welcome along with the emotional clarity that arrives when the Liver organ/meridian is less toxic (stagnated).Couples must realize, however, that the prevalence of Liver Qi Stagnation in modern society is not something simple that can be relieved over night. It may take 9 months or more to release the stress, trauma, and toxin in the system, if it is at all possible. There have been cases resolved within a month's time.

5. I AM EASY TO GET PREGNANT COMPARATIVELY, BUT I ALWAYS HAVE MISCARRIAGE, HOW CAN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE TREAT FREQUENT MISCARRIAGE?

Since the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC.- 24 AD.), Chinese people have been using traditional medicine to effectively treat both male and female infertility. Many texts have been published in the medical literature focusing on these problems that have so recently come to the forefront in western society. TCM for threatened miscarriage includes acupuncture, herbs, diet and an a different approach to exercise. It must be remembered that treating infertility and miscarriage using any method is complicated and involved. The medicine that helps the patient attain a healthy vital energy (Tian kuei) can greatly aid the woman who has had miscarriages due to a hormonal imbalance. For the woman over 40 there are herbs that nourish the deeper vitality that is necessary for the body to call forth healthy ovum.

Currently TCM, both in China and America, is used in conjunction with Western medical techniques and testing to design an effective course of treatment for the couple wishing to achieve not only pregnancy, but a healthy baby delivered at full term.

Sixty percent of all spontaneous abortions occur in the first half of the first trimester of pregnancy. Genetics play a key role in habitual miscarriages. To presume that TCM alters genetic structure without triple blind studies etc., would be a stretch of most peoples imagination. However, Traditional Chinese Medicine is very effective in strengthening a persons' constitution.

If a woman has miscarried, it is important to build and conserve her Qi and build her Blood. This usually means building and conserving Kidney Qi, as within the Kidney both Yin (Blood) and Yang (Qi) are generated. We must remember that Kidney does not just mean the ear shaped organs guarded by the ribs just above the lower back. It means the whole psycho physical interrelated matrix and visceral relationship of Kidney function and its meridian pathways.

In oriental medicine we say that all chronic imbalances effect the
Kidney organ/meridian network. What this means is that if a person has a weak constitution i.e., is pale, feels cold is undernourished, etc., then this is a result of either prenatal (genetic) influences and or lifetime habits and illnesses. The way to change these conditions, if possible, is to change them through treating the Kidney with tools of acupuncture, herbs, diet, and exercise. Kidney's main function in TCM is controlling and supporting both bone and bone marrow, which is essential to make blood. Blood nourishes Qi and the cycle regenerates and builds. Essentially, in oriental medicine it is said that the Blood nourishes, the Qi protects, and the Kidney Qi holds the fetus. If Kidney is deficient, Chinese herbs, acupuncture and dietary considerations are generally applicable for this patient.

6. CAN I HAVE SEX DURING PREGNANCY?

In the oriental culture there is a very direct and honest attitude
toward one's sexuality. Sex is seen as a natural function, as natural as "clouds and rain". Within the training of a TCM practitioner, it is taught that it is not the job of the physician to make judgments about an individual's sexual practices, it is more important to point out the consequences of these practices. Therefore it is easy for the doctor to indicate that sex
(intercourse) during the first trimester is contraindicated, especially for the woman that has a history of miscarriage, as the placenta is not yet fully formed. Many men have a problem with this recommendation.

Usually, TCM practitioners go one step further and indicate that it is probably best for all couples to abstain for the whole nine months of pregnancy. As mentioned previously, modern couples usually have no problem with this idea especially when they consider the investment they have made. For the couple, where the woman is over 40, intercourse is not recommended for the entire pregnancy even by western physicians.

7. WHAT CAN I DO AS A PATIENT TO RAIS MY FERTILITY QUOTIENT WITH TCM TREATMENT

1, Timing and consistency of treatment, whether having acupuncture or just taking herbs, is of primary importance. Consistency of treatment is most important for men, as to raise sperm count and motility with herbs starts to take effect at the fourth month of treatment. It takes 70 days to generate new sperm.

Timing and consistency is also important for women as there are specific hormonal adjustments that can be made at each week of the cycle. Missing a week of treatment may lose an important opportunity to heal a particular segment of the four phase menstrual cycles. It takes a minimum of three consecutive cycles (12 treatments) to do the foundation work of regulation regardless
of biological age. Most women can benefit from this type of concentrated foundational treatment every two years, even if they aren't trying to conceive. This should be started before a woman reaches 28 years old or earlier if birth control pills have been taken.
2, If a woman is nearing forty years old and has had either numerous fertility drugs (over 3 cycles), birth control pills,
PMS, ART procedures, elevated FSH, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, sperm antibodies, or a history of drug, alcohol, or smoking abuse, then it usually takes longer to balance her reproductive system. Likewise, if a man has a history of STDs, history of drug, alcohol, smoking, or sexual abuse, urinary tract infections, burning urination, chronic lower back pain,
prostatitis, difficulty passing urine, or other urological health
issues it takes longer to rejuvenate the reproductive function. The extent of rejuvenation is relative to the effort and inherent constitution of the individual. Daily training sessions with the right exercises usually provide tangible results when combined with weekly treatment, meditation and a reasonable diet. The couple must expect to focus six to nine months before really expecting to evaluate results. There is no quick path when it comes to conception, full term pregnancy and recovery after
delivery. "Turning back the clock" is indeed possible.
3, If a woman is in a state of high level wellness from a traditional medicine's point of view (warm hands and feet and no
PMS are just several indicators), and has a "normal" active and relatively a low stress energy abundant lifestyle, then it is appropriate to evaluate between the sixth and ninth month of consistent treatment.
4, Correct dietary and exercise habits are just as important for the preconceptive mother as for the father. Eating salads (cold nature food) for a year is not the best diet for a person who has generally a low basal body temperature (BBT). Sometimes eating meat such as lamb (warming food) can help tonify a "cold" barren uterus. For male factor and unexplained infertility there are specific physical and mental exercises to be done by couples to generate the right environment necessary for creativity and conception.
5, Combining conventional reproductive technologies with ancient acupuncture and herbal techniques demands accurate communications between team members which includes the patient as captain. Communication between the patient, the acupuncturist and the reproductive specialist is a delicate process. It is important for the physician to have knowledge of the procedures of the
acupuncturist/herbalist and vice versa. Lacking knowledge of an
herbal program that a patient is on can effect the results of an IVF procedure. It can even be detrimental as alternative therapies are effective in changing a persons body. Likewise it is important for the patient to inform the acupuncturist of any herbs or vitamins that are being taken while undergoing treatment, other than prenatal vitamins.

Acne

ACNE AND RELATED DISORDERS

WESTERN MEDICINE THEORY

Acne vulgaris is a chronic disorder of the sebaceous glands, specifically those on the face, chest, and back, where the glands are the largest and densest. Sebum from the glands reach the surface by emptying into the hair follicle and flowing along the hair shaft, the two skin appendages forming the pilosebaceous unit.

The earliest lesion of acne is the comedo, a plug formed by the impaction of pilosebaceous duct by rough material and dried sebum. These plugs are visible as closed comedones (whitheads) and, if the surface is darkened, open comedones (blackheads)black not due to dirt but to oxidation of melanin and sebum in the plugs. Comedones become inflamed as bacteria, normal residents within the duct gland, proliferate within the obstructed glands and produce erythematous tender papules. As inflammation progresses, these papules may become pustular and, in severe cases, cystic. Cystis are presumed to be due to abscess formation deep in the dermis. Various manifestations of the disorder are usually present in the same patient.

Acne involves abnormalities within the sebaceous follicles; these specialized follicles are differentiated from other hair follicles by having large sebaceous glands and a small vellus hair(a delicate, nonpigmented hair). They are present over the face and upper trunk. Four things must preset for acne to develop:
(a), androgen-stimulated sebum production;
(b) Propionibacterium acnes, an anaerobic diphtheroid that constitutes most of the normal follicular flora and proliferates in response to increased sebum;
(c) altered keratinization and desquamation of the cells lining the follicles;
(d) a host inflammatory response.

ACNE GRADING BY BURTON SCALE

Grade 0 Total absence of lesions
Grade I Sub clinical Acne Few comedons visible only in close examination
Grade II Comedonal Acne Comedons with slight inflammation
Grade III Mild Acne inflamed papules with erythema
Grade IV Moderate Acne Many inflamed papules and pustules
Grade V Severe Nodular Acne ? inflamed papules and pustules with several deep modular lesions
Grade VI Severe Cystic Acne Many nodular cystic lesion with scarring

CHINESE MEDICINE THEORY

Internal Etiology of Acne:

1. Malfunction of endocrine system.
2. Imbalance of estrogen and androgen.
3. Oily skin.

External Etiology of Acne:

1. Poor hygiene.
2. Diet of hot, spicy, oily, and seafoods.
3. Smoking cigarettes and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
4. Drug abuse.
5. Oral contraception drug.
6. Deficiency of zinc, magnesium, and other trace minerals.
7. Air and noise pollution
8. Over stress and working, no rest, depression.
9. Menstruation or mal-menstruation.
10. Puberty period.
11. Oral steroids.
12. Constipation.

ACNE TREATMENT

WESTERN MEDICINE TREATMENT

1. Comedonal acne: 1, General hygiene, gently wash face with fingertips 2 times/day using lever 2, Dial, or Almay antibacterial liquid soap. Avoid lotions or cosmetics containing oil. 2, Retin-A 1% gel or 5% cream, pea-sized amount at bed time for 8 weeks. If not responding, will increase Retin-A to 2 times/day if tolerated.
2. Inflammatory acne: 1, General hygiene as above. 2, Retin-A as above; benzoyl peroxide gel 25% every AM, or Erythromycin 2% or clindamycin 1% solution or gel 2 times/day for 8 weeks. If not responding, will add oral antibiotics; tetracycline 500mg 2 times/day or erythromycin 333 mg 3 times/day.

Cystic acne or Scarring inflammatory acne: treat as above, if not responding, discontinue all the above, begin Accutane.

There are many side effects. For example, Retin-A causes cutanemous squamous cell carcinomas and papillomas in some female mice and teratogenic effects on some pregnancy rabbits (Physicians? Desk Reference, 2005). Antibiotics will cause imbalance of bacteria on the face, which will lead to an overgrowth of bacteria insensitive to the specific antibiotic.

CHINESE MEDICINE TREATMENT

1. Explores the internal and external etiologies.
2. Treatment protocol is based on the etiologies, i.e. treating the cause of acne with all natural products and acupuncture.
(1), Deeply cleaning the skin with all natural products, which will prevent all the side effects produced from Western Medicine products. Skin protection products will be used on the skin after deep cleaning.
(2) Acupuncture, using meridian acupuncture, to cleaning the toxic chemicals precipitated in the skin and organs. We will use body, or auricular acupuncture.
(3) Treating the cause of acne with Chinese herbs, which has been used in China for thousands of year and especially for emperors and their wives.
3. Results and evaluation:
If you have the following conditions, the treatment is effective.
(1) Acne dries out and no new acne grows.
(2) Acne still grows, but skin is smooth
(3) Acne hidden underneath skin become obvious, but no further development.
(4) Large acne becomes smaller and atrophies.
(5) Oily skin becomes dry and acne is reduced.
(6) Menstruation becomes normal.
(7) Normal bowel movement, no constipation or halitosis.

4. The regular treatment period might take about 3 months.

8. Vascular treatment: A specially designed machine mixed with Chinese herbs will be used to treat your red face, spider veins, cherry angiomas, couperose veins, broken capillaries, and other vascular lesions, etc.
9. Meridian massage: A Chinese medicinally trained massage therapist will massage you following your specific energy channel to maximally relax you and stimulate your collagen growth and improve your muscle elasticity.

WHAT IS HERBAL STEAMER? HOW DOES IT WORK ON ME?

A steamer that contains pure Chinese herb transports the extracts of Chinese herbs to your skin and treats the underline disease. It is indicated for Normal aging, Acne Vulgris, Epithelialized sinus tracts, Photo damage, Dermatoses, Nevi, etc.

WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION? WHAT MAKES YOUR TREATMENT SO DIFFERENT FROM SOMEBODY ELSE?

Microdermabrasion is a technique by using a machine to abrade your skin with crystal or other materials for the purpose of removing the epidermis and the upper third of the dermis (medical grade), which subsequently heal, producing tightening of the skin.

Microdermabrasion: We will first use the highly purified crystal to abrade the aging epiderm, then we will use Organic Grains - the gentle finishing treatment
often used after a crystals microdermabrasion session to smooth the
skin. One will find that Organic Grains are best used as a smoothing
treatment applied after a microdermabrasion treatment to smooth abraded
skin.

What Are Organic Grains? Organic Grains are a natural microdermabrasion
buffing crystal made of soybean Cellulose and Lignin. Together Cellulose
and Lignin make Organic Grains that used as a polishing agent applied after a crystal microdermabrasion treatment.

Cellulose (wood pulp) is prepared from wood by a process of dissolving
and chemical softening. The pulp is produced from softwoods and
vegetable stalks. Lignin (a complex polymer; the chief non-carbohydrate
constituent of wood; binds to cellulose fiber to harden and strengthen
cell walls of plants) is derived from an abundant and renewable
resource: trees, plants, and agricultural crops. Lignin is non-toxic and
extremely versatile.

Microdermabrasion Procedure: The recommended procedure is to make two
passes with crystals in two different directions roughly separated by
ninety degrees which produces a microscopic abraded skin surface. A
third pass is then made with the softer media organic grains, which
polishes and smoothens your work. Organic grains are also used after an
enzyme peel to loosen or lift the dead skin.

Demonstrate: We can demonstrate the difference an Organic Grains smoothing session makes. We will treat a section of skin on your arm to a crystal
microdermabrasion session. Then we will treat half that area with Organic
Grains. The resulting smoothness of your skin treated with grains will surprise you.

Light Therapy: Microdermabrasion promotes blood circulation and cell
Growth. to strengthen and rejuvenate the skin. Light Therapy can help this process and speed the replacement of cells.

The indication for microdermabrasion:

SCARRING: Acne vulgaris, Traumatic scars, Surgical scars, Hypertrophic scars, chickenpox scars, graft resurfacing.
ACNE VULGARIS
EPITHELIALIZED SINUS TRACTS
PHOTO DAMAGE: lentigines, rhytides, actinic keratoses, Superficaial basal cell cancers, actinodermatoses
TATOOS (posttraumatic and decorative)
RADIODERMATITIS
DERMATOSES: Sebaceous hyperplasia, rhinophyma, rosacea, seborrheic keratoses, xanthoma, discoid lupus, telangiectasia and angiomas
NEVI

WHAT IS THE ACUPUNCTURE FACIAL REJUVENATION PROGRAM?

WHAT IS THE MICRO CURRENT TREATMENT? HOW DOES IT WORK?

Please see the face lift section.

WHAT IS THE PHOTO DYNAMIC TREATMENT?

A biological reaction activated by light energy is used to selectively destroy some aging tissue. The reaction requires a photosensitive structure (photosensitizer) in the target tissue and a light source that emits wavelengths absorbed by the structure. The reaction produces singlet oxygen and other free radicals that are cytotoxic, which preferentially accumulates in abnormal tissue and eradicates the dead tissue. You will enjoy the treatment by its soothing, relaxing, and cozy light emission.

WHAT IS THE ULTRASOUND TREATMENT? HOW DOES IT HELP ME?

Ultrasound is a sound wave that has all the characteristics of audible sound but is limited to frequencies above the nominal 20,000 Hz limit of human hearing. Heating with penetration into tissue is the most important and best understood effect. Usually 50% of a US beam will penetrate 7-8 cm of fat but < 1 mm of bone.

US can be used for decreasing puffiness and swelling of eyes and dark circles, smoothing wrinkles, fine lines, and stimulating collagen production and increasing muscle tone.

WHAT IS THE CHINESE HERB TREATMENT? WHAT BENEFIT WILL I GET FROM IT?

China has thousands of years of experience of keeping people youthful. Hundreds of pure Chinese herbs have been selected and extracted for cosmetic use. Drs. Su and Xu will check your skin characteristic and feel your pulse and find out the best and specific formula for you according your unique requirement and need.

You will use the Chinese herbs in mainly two ways:
1. External use, such as herbal steamer, herbal heating pad on your skin, or feet in herbal water therapy.
2. Internal use, you will be given some Chinese herb tablets specifically prepared for you according your personal need, if it is necessary.
The Chinese herb will regulate your hormone and blood circulation, balance your metabolism and improve your new skin reproduction. And best of all, they do not have side effects after a huge number of human use with thousands of years experience.

WHAT IS VASCULAR TREATMENT? WHAT IS THE INDICATION FOR MY ILLNESS?

Low level High Frequency (HF) and Galvanic (DC) current is passed through a fine-tipped, sterile probe. The blood in the vascular blemish being treated is coagulated or clotted and stops flowing. With the proper post treatment care, the treated vessel is absorbed and blends in to the surrounding tissue in several weeks.

It can be used for clinical removal of telangiectasia (spider veins), cherry angiomas, couperose veins, broken capillaries and other vascularlesions found on the face and upper body.

WHAT IS MERIDAN MASSAGE? HOW DOES IT WORK FOR ME?

There are 14 major meridians in the human body, which are connected with about 400 acupuncture points. The human energy (Qi, pronounced CHI) flows in the meridians to supply the entire body?s function. If there is any blockage in the meridians, there will be a dysfunction; therefore, a human body will show signs of illness.

Meridian massage is an ancient art. Specially trained massage therapists massage your body by following your meridian and facilitating your energy flow. You usually feel very much relaxed and more energetic. Your skin?s energy will be smoothed and the structure of skin will be nourished with smooth energy flow by the meridian massage.

Case Discussion 1:

Unexplained Infertility

Amy S., a 36-year-old woman, is an OB-GYN at a Connecticut hospital, who delivers babies every day. When she finished her residency two years ago, she and her husband wanted to have a baby and tried for a pregnancy for a year to no avail. As a doctor, Amy is well aware of the workings of her body. She consulted the best endocrinologist and infertility specialist in the area, who checked her hormone levels, including the thyroid, pituitary gland, adrenal gland, ovaries, etc., only to find nothing was wrong. She was careful about nutrition, was at her ideal weight of 120 pounds and neither drank nor smoked. She also had an ultrasound study which showed no problem in her tubes, uterus or ovaries. Amy¡¯s husband was also examined and shown to have a normal quantity and quality of sperm with no antisperm antibodies; the delivery of his sperm was also normal. He showed no retrograde ejaculation and no blockage in the ejaculatory duct.

Amy came to me for consultation and evaluation. She is an open-minded physician, devoted to her job, and works between 55 and 60 hours a week. Her husband is an emergency physician who works in the same hospital and he, too, works hard. Amy and her husband are often on call, causing much stress. They both keep irregular hours and often do not see much of each other. From her history, I could tell she was very stressed, unhelpful to her pregnancy situation.

Amy told me she had read an article which indicated that acupuncture plus IVF (in vitro fertilization) could help the patient increase the success rate for pregnancy. She tried it once without success.

Based on the above information, Amy has unexplained infertility. Unexplained infertility is, by definition, when a couple has not conceived after 12 months of contraceptive free intercourse.

There are many causes of infertility, including the following:

For the male:

1.
Impaired production and function of sperm, low sperm concentration. Normal sperm concentration is greater than or equal to 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. A count of 10 million or fewer sperm per milliliter of semen indicates low sperm concentration, and the chances of conception lessen. A count of 40 million sperm or higher per milliliter of semen indicates increased fertility; also, if a sperm changes its shape and mobility or is slow, the sperm may not be able to reach or penetrate the egg.

2.
The malfunction of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis: if the axis is not working properly, the male hormone level will be disturbed and the sperm will be both low in count and slow in activity.

3.
The testes system, including transportation and maturation.

For the female:

1.
Fallopian tube damage or blockage.

2.
Endometriosis.

3.
Ovulation disorders.

4.
Early menopause.

5.
Polycystic ovary syndrome.

6.
Fibroid in the uterine.

Even though there are many women who cannot conceive because of the above reasons, there are also 15 % of couples who cannot conceive due to unexplained reasons, and Amy falls into this category.

Amy was encouraged to have IVF treatment and, beforehand, get acupuncture treatments. She was scheduled to have hormone regulation (hormone treatment) for a month before trying to become pregnant again, and to have acupuncture treatments with me three times a week during that month.

Two groups of key acupuncture points were selected for Amy:

Stomach

Zhong Ji (Ren # 3), Guan Yuan (Ren # 4), Gui Lai (Stomach # 29), Chong Men (Spleen # 12), and Fushe (Spleen # 13). This group of acupuncture points adjusts the hormonal level of the entire body. Zhong Ji and Guan Yuan (Ren # 3 and Ren # 4) directly stimulate the uterus, which makes the uterus muscle very relaxed, and will increase the chance of contraception and easy implantation. Stimulation of the point Fushe (Spleen 12), and Chongmen (Spleen 13)¡ªboth points bilateral and adjacent to the ovary and uterus¡ªwill directly adjust the ovary¡¯s hormonal secretion cycle, in turn increasing the activity of the pituitary, adrenal and ovary axis and increasing the chance of contraception. Gui Lai (Stomach 29) is also adjacent to the ovary and uterus, which assists the first four points in adjusting the entire female hormone system.

The second group is on the back eight-liao points.

PictureEight-liao points (eight points on both sides of the sacral area) directly stimulate the pudendal nerve and the pelvic splanchnic nerve. These nerves will stimulate the uterus and ovaries and help increase the chance of contraception, as well as adjust the entire hormonal system of the female reproductive system.

The two groups above of key acupuncture points will be alternatively treated during each day¡¯s visit, in addition to the Hegu Large Intestine # 4, Quchi Large Intestine # 11, San Yin Jiao Spleen # 6, Xue Hai Spleen # 10 and Tai Chong Liver # 3 ¨C all of which will help adjust the hormone environment in the entire body and thus aid contraception.

After four weeks of treatment, Amy underwent the IVF procedure and was kept on the acupuncture treatment twice a week. Amy reported to me that she had eight eggs mature, an improvement from the first IVF treatment which had produced only three mature eggs.

After a 48 to 72 hour culture, six of her eggs were fertilized and Amy¡¯s doctor implanted four into the uterus. The doctor told her she should have bed rest overnight and that she could return to work the next day; however, I told her to have bed rest for two days, because Amy¡¯s job is more stressful than most people¡¯s, and she has to bend forward in her work to deliver babies.

A month after insemination Amy told me she was pregnant. She was very excited about her condition and eight months later delivered twins, a boy and a girl. She was thrilled with the results, as was her husband.

In my personal experience:

1.
In unexplained infertility, most of the cases are stress related. As an OB-GYN doctor, Amy worked very hard, as did her husband, and they had little time to be together. They are both under constant stress, their bodies always tight, in particular Amy¡¯s uterus muscles. These factors made it very difficult for the fertilized eggs to attach themselves to the uterus. Some patients may be lucky enough to be pregnant; however, they may not retain their baby in the uterus because of the stress and tightness of their uteruses. They may have frequent miscarriages. My treatment is mainly for stress-reduction.

2.
Many unexplained infertility patients have irregular hormone environments in their bodies because of their high stress levels. These will affect the patient¡¯s entire reproductive system, such as Oocyte maturation, delivery, fertilization, implantation, etc. My acupuncture points are selected to adjust the hormone environment and make the different hormones harmony.

3.
Each patient should have about one month of acupuncture treatment before starting the IVF procedure to prepare the patient¡¯s hormonal system and to have her relax psychologically.

4.
It is extremely important for the patient to have 48 hours of bed rest after insemination before taking up normal activities, because at this time the fertilized eggs are very weakly bound to the uterus. Any inappropriate movement during these first 48 hours might cause an early miscarriage.

5.
For the key acupuncture points, you may do the acupressure by yourself as indicated above.

According to studies from Germany and Australia, the IVF treatment without acupuncture has a 29% success rate for pregnancy. However, the combination of acupuncture with IVF increases the success rate to 49%¨Calmost a third higher than IVF alone. Therefore, it would seem advisable to combine the two treatments.

Case 2 Headaches

Case Discussion 2: Intolerable Headache

September 28, 2008

Patient Name: Joan T.

After acupuncture treatment for her headache

Joan T., a 16-year-old schoolgirl, was brought to me by her mother, because the girl had been suffering from headaches since she was 12 and first had her period. Her headaches were so severe that four or five days of the week during her period she was often not able to go to school. These headaches manifested themselves on both sides of the temporal area and also caused severe pain to the left eye. Because of the severity of the pain, Joan called her mother several days a week to pick her up from school, and the headaches were interfering with her school work. This made it necessary for her mother to quite her job and to begin to home school Joan, which she did for several years. However, at 16, Joan returned to high school as a junior in order to start preparing for the college entrance exams as well as apply to colleges. Her headache pain had become so severe that Joan was sleeping poorly, was extremely stressed, which often resulted in tears and depression, which made her eat too much, causing a large weight gain. Her mother had taken her to all kinds of doctors in hopes of alleviating her condition, but nothing helped, especially the drugs prescribed for Joan¡¯s headaches. Her SAT exams were commencing in two months, at which point the mother finally brought her to me for evaluation.

By physical examination, Joan was a slightly obese young girl, very depressed and stressed. She spoke in a low tone; she did not like light, felt pain by touching her temporal area and back of the scalp, i.e. the occipital area.

The patient might have one of the following three types of primary headache, i.e., tension, cluster, or migraine geadaches. She might as well have a mix of the two or three of the following headaches.

Tension headache: Tension headache is the most common type of chronic and frequent headache. The symptoms include steady pain on both side of the head and or back of the scalp with the feeling of pressure and tightness around head and as if a band was put tightly around it. The pain usually increased over period of hours when the pain gets worse, and might develop pulsating quality. The pain radiates from neck, back, eyes or other body parts.

Cluster headache: Cluster headache is often described as a sharp, penetrating or burning sensation on the one eye. The patients feel as if somebody punched the eye and this pain is of sudden onset without warning; within a few minutes excruciating pain develops and people with cluster headaches appear restless The pain is so severe, some patients report it is even worse than childbirth. The cluster headache usually lasts about 2 to 12 weeks, though some chronic cluster headaches may continue for more than a year. These sometimes go with seasonal change.

Migraine Headache: A migraine headache is a throbbing or pulsating headache that is often one side and associated with nausea and vomiting, and sensitive to light, sound, and smell with sleep disruption and depression. These attacks are very often recurrent and do not change with age, sometimes develop a chronic migraine headache.

There are two subtypes of migraine headache, migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Most auras are visual and are described as bright shining light around objects or at the edges of field of vision or zig?zag lines with wave image or hallucinations, some may experience temporary vision loss and motor weakness, speech, or language abnormalities, dizziness, vertigo, tingling, or numbness.

A MRI of migraine patient

The causes of headaches are usually different.

The causes of tension headaches are usually caused by stress, muscular tension, and gouty arthritis on the neck or spine,

postural changes, vascular dilatation, protracted coughing or sneezing and fever and depression and temporal mandibular joint disorder etc.

The cause of the cluster headaches is unknown, however, cluster headache also well known to be triggered by alcohol, nitroglycerin, or similar drugs.

The cause of migraine headaches is unknown either. It is very often. There is a family history of disorder and migraine headache can be triggered with many stimulants for example alcohol, weather,

altitude, exertion, food, and color and contrasting pattern, hormonal change, hunger, lack of sleep, medicine, perfume and stress etc.

From the western medicine point of view, there is many different kind or medications to treat headaches. For example, Topamax, Imitrex are using for migraine headaches with some successful cases. However, beta blockers, antiseizure medication, calcium channel blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, and analgesics such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen etc are tried to treat migraine, cluster, and tension headaches. However, most of these drugs can not provide significant improvement for above headaches. Therefore, more and more patients are starting to look for alternative treatments. Acupuncture is one of the best therapies for the headaches.

Chinese medicine classifies headaches into two categories:

1.

External wind attack headaches: the headaches are caused by external factors, such as wind cold and wind heat. The headaches usually have a character of acute onset and very severe and constant attack.

Wind Cold: it shows periodic attack, the pain always is connected with neck and upper back and aversion to wind and cold, the head feels heavy, likes to have a band to tight around the head. The patient does not feel thirsty, and have thin and white coating on the tongue with floating pulse.

Wind Heat: feels expending headache from inside of the head, accompanied with fever and aversion to heat and wind, reddish face and eye, feels thirsty, constipation, yellowish urine, red tongue body with yellow coating on the tongue and floating pulse.

2.

Internal organ dysfunction headaches: internal headaches usually are slowly onset and the pain is mild and sometimes feels emptiness within the head. When patients are on stress and overwork, the pain will be worse. The pain is on and off and usually last for long time.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, head is the collection of all the Yang Meridians. The six Yang Meridians all distribute to the head and face and also liver Meridians go up to the top of the head, therefore, headaches can be diagnosed based on the meridian distribution. If we know the Meridians distribution, so then we will be easier to make clear diagnosis and treatment.

1,

Tai Yang (Urinary Bladder) meridian headache usually located at top of the head and back of the head and connected to the neck.

2,

Yang Ming (Large Intestine) meridian headache usually is on front of the head, i.e. the forehead including upper portion of the eye.

3,

Shao Yang (Gall Bladder) meridian headache usually is on the bilateral temporal area and radiates to the ear.

4,

Jue Ying (Liver) meridian headache usually is on the top of the head sometimes connecting to the eyes and frontal head. (Large Intestine) meridian headache

Acupuncture treatment for headaches:

First ask the patient the location of the headache and the severity of the headache, i.e. find out which internal organ shows dysfunction.

Second ask the patient about their accompanied symptom, differentiate the wind cold from the wind heat.

Personal tips for clinical use:

Acupressure tips for patients:

1. If you have headache, please differentiate the site of the headache, i.e. identify if you have Tai Yang, Yang Ming, Shao Yang, or Jue Ying headache.
2. After you identify the site of the headache, then try to locate the points by following the above tables and pictures.
3. Acupressure the points with your knuckle, press with the comfortable pressure on the points, count 20 counts then change to another points. You should use the symmetric points at the same time.
4. Your acupressure points mainly locate on the head, use the head points as the major acupressure points. You may ask your friends or family members to help you with moderate acupressure.

Acupuncture Tips for Practitioners:

1. The most important is to identify which meridian headache your patient belongs to, i.e. Tai Yang, Yang Ming, Shao Yang, or Jue Ying.
2. Identify the external type, i.e. wind cold or wind heat. If you could combine the meridian with the external type, your acupuncture effects will be much more than the average acupuncturists.
3. The distal points, i.e. on the hands and feet, are very important for your treatment. Please do not ignore the distal points.
4. Please put your patients in a quite and low illuminated room, with electrical stimulation for 30 min.

5. Many headaches may be triggered by occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, common cold, sinusitis and allergy etc. For those headaches secondary to the above, we have to treat the original trigger. We should treat the sinusitis, occipital neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, common cold, allergy, etc. If we can effectively treat the original trigger of the primary headache, our patient¡¯s recovery rate will be much higher the average of acupuncturists. For many years, 99% of my patients felt much improved after my treatment because I notonly treat the symptom of headache, but I also treat the trigger factors.

Joan¡¯s headache is very complicated. From the western medicine point of view, her headache belongs to migraine headache. However, her headache always triggered by occipital neuralgia and worsen with her hormone and menstruation. Every time when she has hormonal change and also sometimes occipital nerve pain, her headache symptom would get worse. Therefore, she has four to five attacks per week.

After I made a clear diagnosis, first I used GB20, DU16, and Bai Hui and also Tai Yang, and LI4. The patient underwent my treatment three times a week for about two months and she also was injected with cortisone to block her left and right occipital nerve pain, her headache is much-much better. After my treatment, the patient took her SAT test and applied for college, she was accepted into the Boston College and after two years follow up, her mother reported that Joan is great and she has no any major headache attack. She survived her college study. Her mother is very-very thankful to me.
